How do I write prompts that get an AI to build the app I want?

A practical way to brief an AI app builder: goal, pages, data and look, with a ready example prompt you can send to Uttra.

Most disappointing results come from vague requests, not weak tools. Saying build me a store leaves the model to guess your products, your audience and your style, and it will guess something generic.

This guide is about briefing an AI builder from scratch. If you already have something that is broken, a separate guide on prompt debugging covers fixing it.

A good app prompt states who it is for, what it must do, what information it uses and how it should look, in plain words. Start with one clear first version, then change one thing at a time.

Start with the goal and the audience

Write one sentence about what the app is for and who uses it. A booking page for a barbershop used by busy customers on phones leads to different choices than an internal dashboard for staff.

  • What does the visitor want to do in under a minute?
  • Which device will most of them use?
  • What language and tone suit them?

List pages, features and real information

Name the pages you expect, such as Home, Services, Booking and Contact, and the actions on each. Paste real content where you have it: business name, services, prices, working hours, phone number. Where you do not, say so, so placeholders are clearly marked and not mistaken for facts.

Describe the look and the language

Mention mood and colours in words, such as calm, dark green and cream, and give a reference feeling instead of vague praise like modern. State the language and direction, for instance Arabic with right-to-left layout, and any logo you will supply.

Iterate in small steps, then use this example

After the first version, ask for one change per message, and say what to keep. Big rewrites of everything at once make it hard to see what improved. Here is a complete first request:

"Build a website for Al Noor Barbershop in Riyadh. Pages: Home, Services with prices in SAR, Booking and Contact. Visitors are mostly men on phones who want to book a time quickly. Use dark green and cream, a clean calm style, Arabic with right-to-left layout. The booking form asks for name, phone, service and preferred time. Opening hours are 10 am to 11 pm. Use placeholder prices and mark them clearly so I can replace them."

Common questions

As long as it needs to be, usually a short paragraph to a few. Include facts and decisions, and leave out filler.

Write in the language you think in, and state the language the site itself should use. Clear Arabic works well for Arabic sites.

Say what you see and what you wanted instead, for one specific part, and ask for that change only.

Try it on your own project

Describe what you want in your own words and watch your site or system get built — then change it by chatting.
