Can I rely on AI to summarize long documents?

AI can turn a long document into a short summary, but it may miss or distort details. Use it to decide what to read closely, not to replace reading contracts, medical or legal papers.

Reports, contracts, meeting notes and research papers pile up faster than anyone can read them. A summary tool gives a first pass in seconds: the main points, the decisions and the open questions.

This guide covers how document summarising works, how to keep it trustworthy, and how to ask Uttra to build an upload-and-summarise page.

AI can turn a long document into a short summary, but it can miss or distort details, so use it to decide what to read closely, not to replace reading contracts, medical or legal papers.

How a summary tool works

The app extracts the text from the file, splits long documents into parts, summarises each part, then combines them. Scanned PDFs are images, so they need text recognition first, and tables and charts often lose structure on the way.

  • Supported files: PDF, Word and plain text are the usual starting set.
  • Output styles: short paragraph, bullet points, or action items.
  • Length control: let the user choose brief or detailed.

Make it checkable

A summary you cannot verify is a risk. Ask for each key point to include the page or section it came from, and show the original passage on click. Numbers, dates, names and amounts should be quoted exactly, never paraphrased.

Tell users plainly that the summary may be incomplete and that important decisions need the full text.

Privacy of uploaded files

Documents often hold personal or commercial secrets. Decide how long files are kept, delete them after processing where possible, restrict access to the owner, and read the terms of the AI provider you connect. Avoid uploading ID numbers or medical records unless you have a lawful basis and proper safeguards.

A prompt you can paste

“Build a page where staff upload a PDF or Word file and get a summary in Arabic: five key points, any dates and amounts quoted exactly with their page number, and a list of action items. Add a brief/detailed switch, a copy button, and delete the uploaded file after the summary is created. Show a notice that the summary should be checked against the original.”

Common questions

Generally yes, but quality varies with the model and the file. Scanned or poorly formatted Arabic PDFs are the hardest, so test your real documents.

Long files are split into parts, so length is possible but slower and costlier. Very long documents may need a chapter-by-chapter view.

Use it to find the clauses to read, not as legal advice. A person qualified to read the contract should review the full text.
