The word agent is used loosely, which makes it confusing. In practice it describes software built around a language model that can plan, call tools such as search, email or a database, and continue until the task is done or it needs your approval.
Below we explain how agents differ from chatbots, what they do well, where they fail, and what a sensible first agent looks like for a small business.
An AI agent is a program that is given a goal, then decides which steps and tools to use to reach it, checking results as it goes. A chatbot answers one message at a time; an agent can carry out a multi-step task.
Agent versus chatbot
A chatbot replies. An agent acts: it breaks a goal into steps, uses tools, looks at what happened and adjusts. Many products sit between the two, so ask what the system can actually do, not what it is called.
- Goal: a result such as "book the cheapest suitable slot".
- Tools: calendar, inbox, spreadsheet, your own API.
- Loop: plan, act, check, repeat or stop and ask.
What agents are good at
Repetitive tasks with clear rules and low risk: sorting incoming enquiries, drafting replies for review, collecting information from several pages, updating records. They save time where a person would do the same steps again and again.
Limits and safeguards
Agents can misread an instruction, make a wrong guess confidently or take an action you did not intend. Give them the narrowest access that works, require approval for anything involving money, deletion or messages to customers, and keep a log of what they did.
- Start read-only, then add write access step by step.
- Set clear limits on spending and on what can be sent.
- Review the log regularly, especially in the first weeks.
A first agent for your site
A good start is an assistant on your site that answers questions from your own content and, when it cannot, passes the visitor to a human with the details collected.
A prompt you can paste into Uttra: "Add an assistant to my site that answers only from my service pages, collects the visitor's name and phone number when it is unsure, and sends me the conversation by email for follow-up."
